Holland Truck Drivers Go to National Truck Driving Championships
Tuesday, Sep 11 2018 admin
At the Superbowl of Safety in Ohio in August, two Holland truck drivers were first place winners. Seasoned truck driver and 2006 Rookie of the Year in Georgia, Herschel Evans won first in the Best Written Test Score and Sleeper class categories. Tanker driver James Looks operates as a line haul driver when he is not winning first prize in the Tanker class. Learn more about what it takes to be a national truck driving champion, and how this could boost your trucking career.
First Place Truck Drivers
Evans and Looks have driven for Holland for a combined total of 47 years. During this time, each of these truck drivers has excelled in their haul types and divisions. These first place trophies are far from the first awards either driver has won. Along with Rookie of the Year, Evans is a two-time national driving champion in the 5-Axle division, as well as the first Road Team Captain for the ATA from Holland.
He is also a founder of the children’s fundraising initiative, Safety Drive for a Cure. In recognition for all of Evans dedicated work to the trucking industry, he was honored with the Mike Russell Trucking Image Award by the ATA in 2017. This is one of the most prestigious awards given by the ATA to any truck driver. Looks is based in Grand Rapids, Michigan and a two-time first prize winner in the Tanker class. He is primed to have a great run in the truck driving championships.
When asked about these two champion truck drivers, Holland President Scott Ware said, “Greatness can only be reached by those who strive for continuous improvement. Herschel and James are shining examples of this. I would like to congratulate and thank them, as well as all of our hard-working Holland professional drivers, for their strong commitment to safety. Their efforts and dedication make our nation's highways safer for all of us.”
Benefits of Truck Driving Championships
Attending and participating in truck driving championships offers multiple benefits. For starters, you get a chance to mix and mingle with other truckers in a non-work environment. It’s a great time to relax and talk shop without having to actually put in the hours…of service, that is. However, the real benefit of participating in these championships is the boost to your truck driving resume.
As a trucker, the more credentials, experiences, haul types, and endorsements you have on your resume, the better it looks for potential employers. Trucking companies want to hire qualified truck drivers, and the easiest way to determine this is by checking your resume. If you are new to the trucking industry, look into competing in local truck driver competitions.
About Truck Driver Competitions
These truck driving competitions are primarily focused on safety. They almost always involve an obstacle course for behind the wheel skill testing, as well as written tests to check your knowledge. The goal is to encourage safer truck driving. However, as a competitor, you get the opportunity to practice these skills while getting judged. If you are doing a job well done, as you should be since you’re a pro, you can advance in these competitions.
Regarding the safety aspect, Ohio State Driving Competition champion in 2018, Russ Simpson, added, “Safety is very important. You’re in charge of a very heavy vehicle surrounded by a lot of traffic. That’s a huge responsibility and one that every driver needs to take very seriously. Competing in these events is my way of improving my skills and showing respect for the company by giving back the best way I can.”
Ultimately, truck driver competitions offer truckers a chance to show their attention to detail and ability to handle a Class 8 tractor-trailer without issue. In doing so, you stand to win local truck driving competitions, which can propel you to compete on the regional and state levels. You, too, can eventually make it all the way to the National Truck Driving Championships to participate in the Superbowl of Safety.
