white truck on the roadAs a resident of the Bluegrass State, you want to find a trucking school in KY that offers comprehensive CDL training. This will give you the tools you need to accomplish your goal of starting a trucking career. Kentucky is one of the Top 25 states for the number of trucking companies. With 43,023 small to large trucking carriers in the state, Kentucky ranks as #14. Trucking companies hiring in KY include JB Hunt, Paschall Truck Lines, and Carnes Trucking Co., Inc. If you want to position yourself to get your CDL fast while learning everything you need to be a safe and quality truck driver, consider attending a truck driver training program. Here are the six schools offering this type of training in Kentucky.

Professional CDL Training Companies

Kentucky residents have three different privately owned, for-profit trucking schools to choose from:

  • CDL Training Services and Consulting, Inc. in Paducah and Elizabethtown, KY
  • Career Development Center in London, KY
  • Truck America Training in Hillview, KY

Paducah is the 15th largest city in the state with approximately 25,000 residents, while Elizabethtown is slightly larger with over 28,000 residents. Therefore, CDL Training Services and Consulting, Inc. is well suited for trucking students interested in training in a more populated area. Hillview and London are each hovering around 8,000 residents, making the schools of Career Development Center and Truck America Training ideal for truck drivers who prefer that small town feel.

Colleges Offering Truck Driver Training

There are only two community colleges and tech schools offering CDL training in Kentucky. These include:

  • Southcentral Kentucky Community and Technical College in Bowling Green, KY
  • West Kentucky Community and Technical College in Paducah, KY

Bowling Green is the third biggest city in Kentucky with more than 58,000 people, while Paducah is about half that size. Student drivers interested in going where the action is will head on over to Bowling Green, which is actually one of the Top 25 Best Places to Retire in the US. As a result, Bowling Green offers both the big city lights and laid back, safe environment that is well suited for students.

Biggest CDL Training Program in KY

While there aren’t that many trucking schools in Kentucky, one training provider has plenty of locations across the state:

  • Lake Cumberland CDL Training School, Inc.

This CDL training school has facilities in Harlan, Elizabethtown, Ashland, Columbia, Mt. Sterling, Henderson, Middlesboro, and Somerset, KY. LCCDL is approved as a training provider by the Kentucky Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act, as well as the West Virginia WIOA. In addition, the Veterans Administration has also approved the services of Lake Cumberland CDL Training School, Inc. This allows military truck drivers to attend the truck driver training program while using their GI Bill benefits to help cover expenses.

Lake Cumberland CDL Training at Ashland Community and Technical College

The CDL training program is also a partner of the Ashland Community and Technical College. Students who attend ACTC can enroll in the Lake Cumberland CDL Training School at the ACTC Roberts Drive Campus. Companies that have worked with students from the program include Werner Enterprises, Maverick Transportation, CR England, CRST, Covenant Transport, and Averitt Express.

Each of these companies has approved the CDL training program. As a result, if students choose to work for a company approved by the school, and that company provides tuition reimbursement, they might be able to go to trucking school for free.

Tips for Truck Driver Training in Kentucky

Compared to other states offering truck driver training, Kentucky has far fewer opportunities for student drivers. So what can you do if there is not a school near you? Consider that Kentucky has more than 40,000 trucking companies, and all of these carriers need truck drivers to keep their freight moving. Instead of pursuing a CDL trucking school certificate in the traditional way, reach out to truck driving companies in your area.

Here at Trucker Classifieds, we have company profiles for carriers in Kentucky to help you get started. Check out the company profiles of truck driving businesses to see if they provide on the job training. You might luck out by getting a company to provide you with a truck driver trainer and mentor to help you learn the ropes.

Another option is to consider moving to one of the cities offering CDL training from a private company or community college. The reality is these days it’s much faster to go to trucking school to get a trucking job than it is to do everything on your own.

Plus, in most instances, like with Lake Cumberland CDL Training School, you are given the opportunity to meet with trucking company recruiters. These companies are willing to hire you right out of truck driving school even though you have no behind the wheel experience. And this is key because most companies won’t risk hiring you without at least six months of verifiable work history as a truck driver.

Once you have graduated from CDL training in Kentucky, it’s time to find a trucking job. Fortunately, KY trucking jobs are regularly available thanks to the massive amount of companies in the Bluegrass State. However, to get the best paying trucking jobs you need to act fast.
